Once you know your target market, make sure you are reading what they read. It’s a matter of due diligence, to learn what they care about.
For example, my target market is CEOs of small and medium-size companies, as well as senior managers of medium and large-size companies. I have asked them to learn what they are reading and here’s the list: Fortune, Forbes, Fast Co, Inc., WIRED, Bloomburg BusinessWeek, WSJ, Washington Post (I live in DC), NYT.
They are generally not reading USA Today, Washington Times, Newsweek, Time, HBR, MIT Sloan Mgt Rvw. Good to know. Not that there’s anything wrong with those last few organs. It’s just not the preferred feeding for my group.
