Succeeding as a Free AgentNovember 2, 2009
It’s hard work. It takes a particular mindset. Why would you do it? Because there’s nothing else like it in the world. You create from the inside out. You make your living from your own life force. And the potential dwarfs anything another person can offer you: more money, more free time, more discretion over your own life. Here are four things I have found indispensable to success:
1. Make Your Mind Your Highest Priority.
When you are inspired, energized, creative, open, and clear, you are at your most powerful. Insight can be turned into action, and challenges most easily overcome with a healthy mindset. Take care of yourself. Take your health seriously. Associate with people who bring out the best in you and avoid toxic situations. Reward yourself often. Have fun every day. Your work will flourish as a result.
2. Become a Master of Time Design.
Nobody has more time than anyone else and you will never get any more than you are receiving today. Study your habits. Free yourself to do those things that are most rewarding for both you and your business. Become adept at dedicating your energy so that your renewal is top notch. Find systems that work for you and master them.
3. Study People Who Excel at What You Want to Do.
Find those that have demonstrated results in your area of expertise and spend time with them, get access to their acumen, read their books, take their seminars. There is nothing that will accelerate your learning like following in the footsteps of a virtuoso in your field.
4. Commit to Your Life’s Work.
The only reason to become a free agent is because you can do your life better than anyone else. Make all aspects of your business the focus of your intent. Learn what you need to cover marketing, finance, negotiation, delivery, and development. This doesn’t mean you have to do everything. I have a team of assistants who do all kinds of stuff I don’t want to do. But, I know what needs to be done and I can drill down into anything when it’s needed. You will find the fire in your belly when you ignite the passion in your soul. Make the commitment to your own great work.
